our godchildren:

Nubra and Dawa

Playing, eating, and sleeping: That's the daily routine for Nubra and Dawa, the two youngest snow leopards at Krefeld Zoo. TUNDRA supports the rearing of the big cat cubs through a sponsorship.

On Monday, July 11, 2022, snow leopard mother Dari gave birth to two cubs behind the scenes at the zoo. Since then, the two females have been romping around the zoo's spacious enclosure, growing and successfully practicing climbing, jumping, and catching – always under the watchful eye of their mother Dari. Despite their fluffy appearance and blue eyes, the snow leopards are easily distinguishable: Nubra's fur is darker, while Dawa has a lighter coat pattern.

Successful breeding in Krefeld

We are delighted to be able to support these two now-adolescent big cats through a sponsorship and would also like to raise awareness of the threats facing snow leopards in the wild.
Krefeld Zoo looks back on a successful breeding history: For snow leopard father Patan and mother Dari, this is already the fourth litter born in Krefeld. The pair continues a long line of successful breeding programs for these highly endangered mountain animals, which began in 1966 with the first litter. This was a sensation, as until then only Helsinki Zoo had achieved breeding success in Europe. With Nubra and Dawa, the snow leopard breeding program enters its seventh generation.

Threatened Spirits of the Himalayas

In the wild, snow leopards are critically endangered: only an estimated 7,000 animals remain in the mountain ranges of Central Asia. Their habitat spans twelve countries, making joint conservation efforts extremely difficult due to differing legal frameworks. An estimated 450 snow leopards are killed annually through illegal hunting and sold on the black market. Furthermore, climate change threatens the lives of these high-altitude inhabitants: rising temperatures have rendered approximately one-third of their original habitat uninhabitable in the past twenty years.

This is what our commitment achieves

Krefeld Zoo supports snow leopard conservation through donations to the Snow Leopard Trust. This organization establishes protected areas and educates local communities about snow leopards.
We are delighted that our donation will contribute to their protection. Our contribution will also help expand the animals' enclosures, among other things. The volunteer-run association Zoofreunde Krefeld e. V. manages the sponsorships and has been dedicated to the zoo's animals for over 50 years.
